most anticipated movies of 2023

It’s a brand new year, which means a brand new batch of cinema. And there’s some pretty exciting stuff lined up for 2023. And so, to help you fellow film fans to start preparing your watchlists in advance, here are some of the most anticipated movies of 2023 that we can’t wait to see!

1) Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Kicking things off with some comic-book fun, Ant-Man’s journey continues in the MCU with 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Scott Lang has certainly been through the wringer. However, despite being under house arrest, he goes against the grain to help Dr Hank Pym enter the quantum realm. He also has a book deal, which is pretty cool! With where the last instalment of Ant-Man’s story left off, we’re excited to see where the next chapter will take us! Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will come crawling to the big screen on February 17th.

2) Scream VI

The old cult classic continues with another addition to the Scream catalogue. Now reaching its 6th instalment, Scream is the horror franchise that just keeps on giving. And in this one, we’ll be heading back to its 90s slasher roots as four surviving victims of the original Ghostface murders attempt to flee Woodsboro in search of a fresh start. But do you really think old Ghostface is just going to let that go? Hope they can run fast! Scream VI will come creeping into theatres on March 10th.

3) Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam’s first appearance in the DC movie-verse back in 2019 brought joy to comic fans across the board. So we couldn’t be more buzzed for his return this new year! After discovering his powers in the instalment, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will see our favourite goofball of a hero take on the divine Greek entities of Hespera and Kalypso. A bumbling cape wearer Vs the formidable daughters of the Greek God Atlas? This task will no doubt prove to be one hell of a challenge. We can’t wait to see how he pulls through! Shazam! Fury of the Gods will come crashing into theatres on March 17th.

4) John Wick: Chapter 4

One of the few action franchises that has yet to overstay its welcome, John Wick: Chapter 4 is shaping up to be an epic adventure and a half! Set to take place shortly after the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, fans of the franchise are itching to see the effect the drastic shift of John Wick’s relationship with the High Table will have. And not to mention the to-die-for action sequences that will inevitably come of this. We are beyond hyped to see our favourite hitman throwdown with the ivy-league assassins of his own order! John Wick: Chapter 4 is due to hit theatres on March 24th.

5) Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

To all fellow fans of tabletop gamers: who among us hasn’t wished at some point that we could just plunge headfirst into our favourite campaign? Well, this new year, the silver screen will be granting us a hint of the escapism we’ve all been craving with this brand-new Dungeons & Dragons-themed movie! A thief and a motley band of adventurers set out on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic. However, in typical D&D fashion, their quest goes awry when they encounter unexpected adversaries. The imagination of D&D fans unleashed; we’re stoked to see what this one throws at us! Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is due to hit the big screen on April 7th.

6) Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

They’re back, people! The Spring of 2023 will see the return of everyone’s favourite motley Marvel team, with James Gunn officially confirmed to lead the project as director, much to the relief of many fans. Marvel has kept the plot pretty well under wraps so far. However, it has been confirmed that Chukwudi Iwuji will be portraying the High Evolutionary and the next villain the Guardians will tackle. Whatever lies ahead for our unlikely team of heroic misfits, we know it’s going to be big! Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theatres on May 5th.

7) The Little Mermaid

Disney remakes have gotten a bit of a bad rep in recent years, and it’s not entirely without reason. However, the reimagining of their 1989 animated classic has been teased for quite some time, and what we’ve seen of it so far does look pretty gorgeous. Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s 1837 fairytale, the Disney musical fantasy follows Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton, and her longing to discover more about the world beyond the sea. Making a deal with the Sea Witch, Ursula, Ariel can experience life on land at a great personal cost. With one or two gems among the relentless outpouring of live-action Disney remakes, here’s to hoping this one will live up to the charm of its trailers. The Little Mermaid will come swimming to screens on May 26th.

8) Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

For comic fans everywhere, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was the highlight of 2018. An absolute gem of the Marvel Sony-Verse, the story will continue in 2023 with Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, in which Miles Morales will dive head-first into the Spider-Man multiverse yet again, alongside Gwen Stacy and Spider-Man B. This time, the team will encounter a host of new Spider-People from across the ages, with whom Miles hopes to unite against a new threat. However, things go awry when disagreements emerge on how to deal with their latest adversary, causing cracks to appear in the united Spider front. A grand-scale adventure with stunning animation, this deep dive into the Marvel Multiverse can’t come soon enough! Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will come swinging into cinemas this June 2nd.

9) Elemental

Good news for all you Pixar fans out there; our favourite animation studio will be releasing its customary summertime movie this year! And it’s looking pretty promising. An all-new original, Pixar’s Elemental will take place in a city where the personified elements of fire, air, land and water co-exist in balanced harmony. However, they still consider themselves separate. And yet, when a fiery young woman meets a watery, go-with-the-flow kind of guy, the two discover over time just how much they have in common. A sweet romance with all the charm and humour we’d expect from Pixar, this gorgeously animated feature-length promises to be the mid-year uplift we always need. Elemental is due to hit cinemas on June 16th.

10) Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

With the last Indiana Jones released in 2008, we all assumed our favourite daredevil Professor had finally hung up his hat. But 2023 proves us wrong with its scheduled release of an unexpected fifth instalment. With Harrison Ford returning to reprise his role, we’ll see an older Indiana tackling one of his most infamous enemies – the Nazi regime. This time, the regime attempts to interfere in the historical space race, aiding the US in scientific development for their own nefarious means. It’s an intriguing concept, to say the least. We’re definitely interested to see where this one goes. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be hitting up cinemas on June 30th.

11) Dune: Part 2

The intergalactic adventure continues! Based on the 1965 sci-fi epic by Frank Herbert, Denis Villeneuve will release the second leg of his ambitious adaptation of Herbert’s grand-scale masterpiece. In 2023’s upcoming instalment, Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen people as he devises a plot for vengeance against those who tried to destroy his family. But, plagued with visions of a dark and destructive future, Paul must make a devastating choice that will have drastic consequences for himself and those around him. After the stunning epic that was the first movie, we cannot wait to see Villeneuve’s expansive vision of Dune return. Dune: Part 2 is due to grace the silver screen on November 3rd.
